Obituary for Norma June Maxey

June was born on April 9, 1931 in Blair, Oklahoma to Cicero and Rose Billington. She grew up in Victory, Oklahoma and attended the local school. As a member of the Victory High School girls Basketball, winning the State Championship earned June and her teammates a trip to New Orleans for the Regional Playoffs and of course an unauthorized, unchaperoned tour of Bourbon Street.
After High School June attended Central State College in Edmond, Oklahoma, where she also worked as a switchboard… operator. It was during this time that she met and fell in love with Charley Ray Maxey. June landed a job at Lincoln Elementary School in Wichita, Kansas and Charley landed overseas with the 45th Infantry Division. In August of 1952, shortly after his return to the States, Charley and June were married.
In 1957 with a son in each arm and a Bachelor of Science Degree in education in her hand, June and Charley left Kansas and came to California. They settled in Wasco where she promptly began teaching with the Elementary School District. In 1962 a third son joined the family and by 1972 June, now universally known as “Mrs. Maxey” had earned her Master of Arts Degree in Education from Fresno State.
“Mrs. Maxey” enjoyed a rewarding career as an Educator for forty plus years until her retirement in 1992. She will be remembered by her students as strict, her colleagues as worthy and the administration as formidable.
June Maxey (Toots) enjoyed a rewarding life as an avid reader, traveler, San Antonio Spurs Fan, casino goer, homemaker, genealogist and a lover of all things by Thomas Kinkade. Those will remember her close to her as logical.
Norma June Maxey most of all will be remembered by all whom knew her as respected. June was proceeded in death by her parents Cicero and Rose Billington.
She was survived by, husband Charley Maxey, three sons Mitchell, Mark and wife Gayle, and Scott all of Wasco; two grand daughters Melissa Gary and husband Jack of Armona and Melinda Garvin of Bakersfield; three great grand children Kaylee Hill, Karissa Hill and Jackson Gary all of Armona; two sisters Melba Bilbry and husband Kenneth of lawton Oklahoma and Sharon Morabito and husband Jim of San Luis Obispo; one brother Forrest Billington and wife Donna of Apple Valley and many cousins, nieces, nephews and their families and one special son Bob Brown of Wasco.
A graveside funeral service under the direction of Peters Funeral Home was held at Wasco Memorial Park on Saturday, February 17, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. for June Maxey, 75, of Wasco, who passed away February 11, 2007 in Bakersfield. Grady Billington of Church of Christ in Madera, California officiated the service and interment follow.
