Obituary

Born in Whittier, CA, to Leigh F. Barrows and Jeanette Reger, Eleanor and her six sisters were raised in Los Hills, CA, on the Universal Oil Company lease where her father was the superintendant. A graduate of Wasco High School and Taft Junior College, Eleanor joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1944, serving in North Carolina, Oklahoma, and California at the El Toro Marine Air Corps Station. While stationed in Oklahoma, Eleanor met Robert L. Scarbrough of Lenoir City, TN, a U.S. Navy member. Upon leaving the Marine Corps at the end of World War II, she married Robert who remained in the military subsequently transferring to the U.S. Air Forced in 1950. For the next fifty-one years, Eleanor and Robert lived in the Sacramento area, first in North Sacramento, the Mather Air Force Base, and finally Rancho Cordova. During this period, Eleanor worked for the State of California and raised two children, Robert and Joan. In 2001, Eleanor moved Glenwood Gardens in Bakersfield where she lived until 2010. For the last three years she lived with her son, Robert, in Tehachapi, CA. Eleanor leaves behind many friends in Kern County and the Sacramento area. All who knew her, loved her, especially her smile. She will be dearly missed. Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Scarbrough, and her daughter, Joan Parker of Wasco, CA. She is survived by her son, Lieutenant Colonel Robert L. Scarbrough , U.S. Air Force, retired, and his wife Erlinda, Eleanor’s caregiver for several years. A graveside service will be held at Wasco Memorial Park, Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at 11am.
