Obituary for Charles Craig
Charles “Chuck” Craig was born September 19, 1931 in Mt. Pleasant, Texas; one of four children born to A.A. and Evie (Moore) Craig. The family moved to California, settling in Wasco in 1940.
Chuck attended Maple School where is became active in Boy Scouts. He went on to graduate from Wasco High School in 1949. In high school, Chuck played football, basketball and ran track. He was active in Future Farmers of America where he raised and showed livestock, at the Kern County Fair, Great Western… Livestock Show and the California State Fair. He won several first place awards in Ag Mechanics at the California State Fair. He began his higher education at Bakersfield College, earning his AA Degree and continuing on to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. But before he could earn his Bachelor’s Degree he was drafted into the Army, where he served as an instructor for the Second Echelon Maintenance. After serving two years at Ft. Ord he returned to Cal Poly, completed his Bachelor of Science, earned his Master’s Degree and two teaching credentials, one in Secondary Education and one in Agricultural Education.
Chuck met Barbara Haile while at Cal Poly and they were married in 1956. They moved to Wasco in 1959. Chuck retired from teaching in 1999 after 40 years in the Ag Department at Wasco High School. During his tenure, FFA won Sweepstakes in Ag Mechanics every year that they exhibited at the Kern County Fair and the California State Fair. Chuck was named Teacher of the Year for the Agriculture Teachers Association.
Chuck was active in the United Methodist Church of Wasco; was a member of the California Ag Teachers Association, California Teachers Association, Wasco Historical Society, Wasco Rose Festival and assisted in numerous fundraisers for local clubs.
Chuck was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years Barbara Craig in 2003. He is survived by his children, Sherod Craig (Audrey), Warren Craig (Cheryl) and Adrienne Craig; granddaughters, Michelle and Elyse; sister, Jewel; nieces, Carrie and Pamela; and nephew, Charles Allen.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 17, at 10am at the First United Methodist Church of Wasco for Charles H. Craig, age 84, of Wasco who passed away September 9, 2016 in Bakersfield.
